Why Outdoor Education Matters: Year 7 Students Experience Learning Beyond the Classroom
10 March 2026

Our Year 7 students recently returned from three memorable days of Outdoor Education just outside of Kenilworth, marking the first time St Andrew’s Anglican College has partnered with outdoor education specialists Adventure Alternatives.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, students immersed themselves in a wide range of activities including mountain biking, archery tag, hiking, bird box building, billycart and raft construction as well as team-based challenges. Each experience is designed to encourage students to step beyond their comfort zones, collaborate with peers and discover new strengths.
Outdoor Education plays a vital role in the St Andrew’s learning journey. Experiences like the Year 7 Camp allow students to grow beyond the classroom, developing independence, responsibility and resilience. Away from their usual routines, students learn to manage their time, care for their belongings and make decisions - important life skills that build confidence and prepare them for the years ahead.
Equally important is the opportunity to strengthen teamwork and communication. Through shared challenges and group problem-solving, students learn to support one another, listen actively and appreciate the value of collaboration. These moments often become the foundation of lasting friendships and a deeper sense of belonging within the College community.
Our Outdoor Education program is intentionally designed as a sequential journey, with each experience building on the last to develop Courage , Compassion and character in our students. The Year 7 Camp is an important early step in this journey, helping students form strong connections with their peers and teachers while beginning to discover the confidence that comes from embracing challenge and adventure.
A sincere thank you to the dedicated staff who accompanied our students and made this experience possible. Programs like these rely on the generosity of teachers who step away from their own families and commitments to provide meaningful opportunities for our students.
At St Andrew’s, experiences like Year 7 Camp are an important reminder that learning doesn’t only happen in classrooms. Sometimes the most powerful lessons are learned on a mountain bike trail, around a campfire, or while building something together as a team.
