St Andrew’s Anglican College is proud to celebrate the achievements of one of our outstanding instructors, Saskia Kells, who has been named Best Learn to Swim Teacher in Queensland and nominated for the prestigious Australian Learn to Swim Teacher of the Year Award.

Saskia’s recognition highlights her exceptional dedication to her students and her passion for creating engaging, supportive and inspiring learning environments.

“It ‘s an incredible honour,” she said of receiving the award.

“Teaching is so rewarding in itself, but to be acknowledged in this way is a wonderful reminder of the impact I can have on our students and their families. Personally, it’s a reminder of how fortunate I am to do work that I love every day and to be supported by such wonderful students, families, and colleagues. Professionally, it reinforces the value of dedication, ongoing learning, and the positive impact that quality teaching can have on individuals and the wider community.”

Known for her vibrant and innovative teaching style, Saskia believes her strength lies in balancing strong technical instruction with genuine connection.

“I take the time to understand each student as an individual, their strengths, challenges, and motivations so I can adapt my approach to suit their needs,” she said.

Her teaching is guided by patience, encouragement, and respect, always aiming to create a safe and supportive environment where students can thrive.

“For some children, the water can feel overwhelming and bring a lot of anxiety. My approach is always to create a calm, supportive environment where they feel safe and understood. By making lessons fun, gentle, and positive, I help children shift from fear to enjoyment, allowing them to gradually feel comfortable and capable in the water.”

Saskia’s teaching journey began early, when she started teaching ballet at just 16 years old. After spending 10 years as a stay-at-home mum, she was encouraged by her children’s swim teacher to step into the pool deck and give swim instructing a try. It was a leap that quickly became a calling.

“What I love most about teaching is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact — helping students grow in confidence, develop new skills, and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach, “ she said.

“Every student is memorable. Watching their confidence grow as their skills develop is incredibly rewarding and truly the highlight of my day.”

Saskia also credits the St Andrew’s community as a vital part of her success.

“The supportive environment, strong values, and sense of belonging here have encouraged me to continually grow as an instructor,” she said. “Working alongside dedicated colleagues and supportive families has inspired me to give my best every day. The encouragement from the community has played a big role in shaping the teacher I am today.”

Saskia’s recognition at state and national levels is not only a celebration of her personal achievements but also a reflection of the values of compassion, dedication, and excellence that lie at the heart of the St Andrew’s community.

The St Andrew's Learn to Swim program is run out of the St Andrew's Anglican College Aquatic Centre and caters for swimmers from 3 months to adults, all levels, ages and skills. The St Andrew's Swimming Club is one of the Top 10 clubs in Australia, home to multiple Olympians and Paralympians.
