Harry Hughes

Class of 2017

Producing intelligent, boundary-breaking and spectacular theatre; graduate Harry Hughes has started his own Arts company, bringing young theatre-makers together and fully immersing himself in the Arts.

Taking his love for theatre into his post schooling life, Harry completed a Bachelor of Acting at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, graduating with the Griffith Award for Academic Excellence.

What did you do directly after school? Studies, travel, living etc

I was very lucky that, before I had graduated, I had already been accepted into the Queensland Conservatorium’s BA Acting. So that summer I spent with the amazing friends I had made at St Andrew's. A highlight was, instead of schoolies, my mates and I went to New Zealand to hike, bungee jump and enjoy the scenery (the best decision).

If applicable, what did you study at University and graduation news etc

I studied at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, doing a Bachelor of Acting in their elite performing arts department run by Paul Sabey and Jacqui Somerville. I graduated with The Griffith Award for Academic Excellence.

Again if applicable, What are you doing since graduation?

Since graduating, I have started my own Arts company ‘Serpentine Arts Company’ where I have directed and produced the fabulous ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

What were your interests during school… drama, sport, music etc and are you still involved?

My Year 12 electives were Drama, Visual Art and Business. I was Arts Leader in my final year and got involved in Into The Woods, The Real Inspector Hand and The Dining Room.

What are your long-term goals now that you have graduated?

From here on out it is about taking risks. Working on Serpentine Arts Company, writing plays and showcasing brilliant talent!

What challenges you faced post-school, and even post-uni?

COVID struck in my final year of University, so all my degree got put online for the most part of 2020. Our first show for the year became in-house only, but luckily our final show was a success with the public, the critics and for our cohort.

What are your highlights from school, teachers, programs etc?

I will always advocate for St Andrew's being one of the best schools. The opportunities and programs that St Andrew's offer and provide are extraordinary, and develop their students into confident members of the adult world. My highlights were the strong relationships you develop with the staff; the respect and genuine care that the staff have for the students is second-to-none. I also loved Home Room every morning as you get to enjoy the company of other grades, offer support and feel supported.
