Danyon Lamb

Class of 2013

Finding passion in building businesses from the ground up, Danyon continues to thrive in the tech start-up space.

With a keen interest in Maths, Physics and IT during school, Danyon studied his Information Technology degree at QUT. Landing a job at Uber in 2016, he assisted launching Uber Eats in Brisbane then lead the operations team for the next 16 launches around Australia & New Zealand. This opportunity allowed Danyon to travel around the world for two years, helping to scale Uber Eats in different regions and landed him in Amsterdam, where he now still lives.

What did you do directly after school? Studies, travel, living etc

After finishing Year 12, I commenced my bachelor's degree the following year in Brisbane at Queensland University of technology living on campus at Cromwell colleague (University of Queensland on-site housing). My first full-time job was at Uber in 2016 as an operations associate where I was hired to assist in launching Uber Eats for Brisbane (very early days Uber), and with the success of that launch, I then stepped up to manage & lead an operations team for the next 16 Uber Eats city launches around ANZ in 2017.

As my work scope expanded I was lucky that it took me around the world for the next 1-2 years to help scale the Uber Eats business in different markets and regions which landed me in Amsterdam in 2019 (where I still live) to support Europe, the Middle East, and Africa Uber Eats business. I've since left Uber in 2021 (total of 5 years) and joined a series A SaaS company called Whereby as the Revenue Operations Lead.

Did you study at University and graduation news etc?

I studied Information Technology majoring in Business Systems with a minor in Computer Science at QUT. In my second year, I turned my bachelor's into a dual degree also taking on honors in electrical engineering. I worked full time during my studies at Uber as an operations manager and once I completed my undergraduate in Information Technology, I decided to drop my Electrical Engineering honors and lean into the work opportunity that was Uber.

What are you currently doing workwise?

I currently lead the Revenue Operations team at a series A SaaS company called Whereby based out of Amsterdam. To capture the company at a high level, Whereby is a remote-first video meetings company with a vision of a world where anywhere works.

What are your long-term goals?

It's a great question, and very much still undecided. I find passion in building businesses from the ground up, my skillset thrives in early-stage development where 80% done is better than 100% perfect, so the tech start-up space is where I can drive a lot of value. I would love to run my own start-up at a point in time, but I have many hoops to jump through before I get there. In the short term, I want to keep working and traveling in places I've never been (South America is high on the list).

What were your interests during school… sport, music etc and are you still involved?

I always enjoyed Maths, Physics, and IT, I was lucky it came to me quite naturally which helped me keep engaged and on top of course work (majority of the time.. haha)

What are your highlights from school, teachers, programs etc?

To recap just a few, a shoutout to Dave Rudkin and Stuart Koy! Although I wasn't always the most dedicated and easy student at times, they always found a way to keep myself and the class engaged, and a lot of the content I learned from them I used throughout my study at University. But I had an all-around great experience at school, all the teachers were fantastic.

Do you stay in touch with friends from school?

I do my best, but I can definitely be better at this. The timezone of Amsterdam is the exact opposite to Australia, so it's quite challenging to keep in touch with friends and family -- usually requires an early rise phone call or a mid-night conversation.
