Year 11 Student wins ASSIST Scholarship.

Congratulations to Dani Sjogren who has won a prestigious ASSIST scholarship to study in the USA for the 2012/13 school year. Dani will attend The Blake School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a highly-regarded independent school with a focus on Liberal Arts and academia and a 110 year history that includes Academy, Pulitzer and Emmy award winners as members of their alumni.

American Secondary Schools for International Students and Teachers (ASSIST) was established in the US in 1969 to provide opportunities for young people from other countries to gain a greater understanding of the USA, its culture and traditions. In the upcoming US school year there will be 167 ASSIST scholars, 94 of them on full-scholarship, from 22 countries around the world participating, including 7 Australian students. Members of the Assist board travelled the world in the later part of 2011 interviewing around 600 shortlisted candidates, who had been selected from over 1500 applicants worldwide. “Whilst the application process and interview was challenging” Dani said, “I’m really looking forward to being part of an American school for a year, participating in as many sports and activities as I can and learning more about their culture”.  Congratulations Dani, we can't wait to hear all about this amazing opportunity.

Year 9's are Urban Bound

Our Year 9 students are well into the Urban Bound program with half of the cohort in Melbourne and the other half working in Brisbane.  Students in Melbourne have been working hard on their investigation projects and have had a wide "big city" experience, travelling on trams and trains, going to an AFL match and the theatre, spending time at Federation Square and the Eureka Tower, working at Ormond College at Melbourne Uni and paddling down the Yarra River.  Perhaps the most humbling experience of all has been their work with the homeless, where they have worked with the St Vincent de Paul Volunteers in the Soup Vans that visit various locations around the city and distribute food to those in need. Pictured here are some students with one of the Soup Vans.

Young Musicians Research Scholarship Program Recipient
Congratulations to Year 12 Music Extension student Micheala Becker who has gained entry into the Young Musicians Research Scholarship Program, a joint initiative of the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Conservatorium (Griffith University). This program invites students to join with a team of researchers from the Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre and research specialists from the State Library of Queensland. St Andrew’s will be represented at this prestigious program for the second year running, with only 10 students selected state-wide. This is an amazing opportunity for a very well deserving recipient. Well done Micheala!

SnAAC Shack News

Congratulations to our SnAAC Shack on recently being awarded the Gold Menu Award from the Food Smart Schools Initiative.  This award recognises exceptional menus and practices and is a very fitting testament to the work of Dmitri and staff.  This week the SnAAC Shack was even featured on Today Tonight - you can view the story here. Thanks SnAAC Shack for ensuring that we all have healthy and delicious choices!

Layne Beachley 'inspires' Year 7

We were delghted to welcome Surfing superstar Layne Beachley to the College. Layne worked with our entire Year 7 cohort presenting an "inspire' session. Layne focussed on goal setting, individuality, creating and taking opportunities. The session was very interactive and Layne managed to work with each student. later that afternoon, a large group of girls got the chance to surf with Layne. She was certainly an inspiration - more photos are here. We are delighted that this will be a yearly event for our Year 7 cohort as they enter the Seconday school.

From our College Captain - Laura
WOW!! No words could come together to truly express how amazing working with the cast and crew of Chicago (who became family) has been over the last few months! Thank-you so much to all the cast and crew and especially all the teachers and director Miss Mackie (the best director!!) who put their heart and soul into the production over the past eleven months !! The brilliant reviews and standing ovations were just a fraction of the joy we got from stepping on the J stage over the past week! Every second of each rehearsal paid off, so thank-you once again to all the cast and crew for not only putting on the "Best school production ever at The J. Professional shows would be happy to perform as well as that" ( Mark, theatre manager at the J), but for giving the year elevens and twelve's the most amazing memory of their last school musical !! more photos here
College Captain,
Laura

Year Six China Tour - A Trip of a Lifetime!

From Tuesday, April 10 until Wednesday, April 25, twenty-one Year Six students and four staff from St Andrew's Anglican College attended Beijing Primary for the annual Friendship School's visit. The tour group had an amazing two weeks experiencing all the sites of Beijing as well as attending classes on Chinese language, culture, sport and history. The children learned so much and had experiences that will remain with them forever. They made new friendships and gained a wonderful understanding of Chinese history and culture. St Andrew's will be hosting a reciprocal visit early in Term Three for Beijing Primary to experience life, culture and education in Australia.

What a special morning it was when we welcomed hundreds of our Grandparents and Special Friends to join us for Chapel.  It was smiles all around as we discovered who our oldest and tallest and most talented grandparents were!  Congratulations to our students who performed for our grandparents and then welcomed them into the classrooms.  Thank you Grandparents for joining us today!  More photos from the day can be viewed here.

Year 11 Commedia Dell Arte performance examination

Don't be afraid, it's just the Year 11 Drama students at their at their Commedia Dell Arte performance examination this morning! The pieces were really quite remarkable considering the limitations placed on the students to prepare their examination piece based on a list of scenarios provided ten minutes before the show! Our fabulously creative individuals demonstrated their skills, maturity and talent in the time provided.

If you would like to see this remarkable theatre, join us on Wednesday night the 21st of March at 6pm in The Studio.

Leadership Induction
Congratulations to all of our 2012 Leaders who were inducted in a lovely ceremony this week. We know that you will fulfill your roles admirably and be excellent ambassadors for the College.
We were very priviledge to have Brad Carron-Arthur as our guest speaker.  What an incredible young man, himself once a School Captain, Brad is now on a mission to run from Canberra to Cape York unassisted with only what he can carry in his backpack!  His personal story about mental health and his quest to raise awareness is truly inspirational.  You can follow Brad on his website  www.bradrunsnorth.com or on facebook and donate to this worthwhile cause.  Our students really enjoyed running with Brad on the beach this morning as he heads towards Gympie.
If you missed the ceremony you can view some great footage here.

It was oh so close!
The closest carnival in 10 years when Flinders just pipped our Secondary Swim Carnival team by just two and a half points after 100 races. Congratulations to our team on a superb day. Five individual Age champions and four Age group champions was fantastic! More information is available on our Swimming page. More images also available here

It was a great way to kick start the year, supporting our community and getting active. Thank you for your support. All the photos are available here

Secondary Swim Carnival success

Congratulations to all swimmers for a wonderful Secondary Swim carnival. Rafter house retained the House 'duck' for incredible house spirit and Hocknull won the overall event. A huge thanks to all involved. The participation statistic from the day was huge and is reflective of what it means to be a St Andrew's student. It is credit to the wonderful house spirit and a willingness to get involved by all students that is so impressive. Congratulations to all new record holders as well selected team members. Outstanding Academic success
The College is amazingly proud of all our Year 12 students who have achieved success at so many different levels. In terms of statistics:
  • Five students achieved an OP 1, which is an outstanding result.  Congratulations to, Tom Shannon, Ellen Foster, Aprile Wenke, Sterling Tebbett and Georgia Harman. This equates to 10.6% of our cohort, one of the highest percentages in the state.
  • 21% received an OP of 1 or 2, far above the state average of just under 6%.
  • 34% received an OP of 1  - 5.
  • Our most remarkable statistic is that our OP 1 – 15 result, often used by the media to rank schools in terms of their Year 12 results, is 100%.  In our collective experiences of education in Queensland, 100% is extremely rare and usually only achieved in small schools with enrolments less than 10 in Year 12.

As these results come out, we also begin to hear of other offers made to our students.  Our boys College captain (Sam Johnson) was the recipient of an $83,000 scholarship to undertake Engineering through the University of NSW Co-op program.  Emily Wells was selected out of thousands of applicants to attend NIDA's Young Actors Studio Program in 2012.  Shaun Cornish has been invited to start as an apprentice chef at the Hyatt Coolum which is a very rare occurrence but an opportunity that Shaun will undertake with real passion and commitment.

These results are testament to the hard work of our Year 12 students, but also the support of their parents in encouraging them throughout their education.  It is certainly a wonderful result and the combined efforts of so many people is what enables students to achieve.

Remy creates History
Congratulations to St. Andrew's student Remy Fairweather who has created Australian swimming history when she broke one of the longest standing age-group AUSTRALIAN records being held by Hayley Lewis for 22 years !!! The record is now Remy's. The event was 14 years Girls 400m Freestyle in a time of 4:10.55, this also got her a bronze medal in the OPEN State 400m FINAL. She is now the fastest 13 yr old and 14 year old ever in Australian swimming history in this event. On behalf of everyone at St. Andrew's - congratulations Remy - We are very proud of you. Here is an audio file of her coach being interviewed on ABC radio about Remy
