Interhouse Volleyball Championship

It’s back!  Following Rafter’s victory with the inaugural event of 2012, which House will be champion in 2013?  The “Interhouse Champions” trophy is again up for grabs (or sets and spikes).  Close competition last year was at times determined by sheer House spirit, so all students taking part on behalf of their House must make sure they wear their House shirt on the day!  Good luck to all.  Ready, set….

Now the last remaining question is…..which House will win in 2013?!

Training Times

There is a range of training options for volleyball:

1. To participate in the Term 1 competition, players must attend at least one training session per week during Term 1.

2. To participate in the QLD Schools Cup competition later in the year, players must attend at least one training session per week from the start of Term 2.  Of course, players are welcome to attend as many training sessions as they wish!

- Tuesday morning: 7.00am start in the RGC, finishing at 8.10am

- Wednesday afternoon: 3.15pm start in the RGC, finishing at 4.30pm

- During the day training: Lunch till 3.00pm on nominated days (Monday Years 11-12; Tuesday Years 9-10; Friday Years7-8) .  Note: this training is during Term 1.

2013 Battle Against Ovarian Cancer

This year’s beach volleyball fundraiser at Natalie Cook’s beach sports centre in Brisbane saw almost $120000 raised for research into this insidious disease.  After our participation with a staff team in 2012, we were very pleased to send a student team as well this year.  Thanks to Emily McIntyre, Lauren Reynolds, Imogen Kerr, CJ Van Dyk and Eugenie Zhan for their time, enthusiasm and fundraising efforts.  It was also great to welcome back our 2012 valedictorian, Micheala Becker, who joined our staff team this year.  It was a great day with much fun, sun and sand.  A quarter finals berth for the staff team was a bonus on the day!  To those students who were keen to participate this year but found the Christmas holiday fundraising rather challenging, good news…..the event organisers are hoping to have the 2014 Battle later in the year, so stay tuned!

2012 Queensland Schools Cup -

Junior Schools Cup

Last year saw the College participate for the first time in the major volleyball event of the year for most schools….the Queensland Schools Cup state championships.  Our teams from Junior to Open division, both boys and girls, spent a weekend in Toowoomba (Opens) or Brisbane (Juniors) to play a number of games against teams from around the state, and also to take on the official duties of referees and scorers.  A number of our players were talent scouted from their skills displayed during their matches – again, well done!

The excitement of this tournament returns in 2013 for any student keen to return or participate for the first time.  The Open (Years 10-12) competition takes place from Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 August in Toowoomba, while the Junior (Years 7-9) competition takes place from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 October in Brisbane.  To join a QLD Schools Cup team, players need to attend at least one training session each week from the start of Term 2.  To sign up, see Mr Elley or the Sports Office.

Another fantastic weekend of volleyball

Senior Schools Cup: Open & Senior Divisions in Toowoomba (early August)

We did it!!  We not only survived the cold of Toowoomba for the Senior and Open divisions of the QLD Schools Cup, we also returned having won our first ever matches at this state-wide championships!  From a number of matches played over the course of three days, I could not have been more proud of our efforts and results, considering that volleyball is in its first year at St Andrew’s.  To summarise each team’s weekend:

-          Open Boys: very close to winning a couple of sets in very tight matches fought all the way.  Fantastic to watch our team use their three hits to set up for spikes at the net, and to show great hustle in covering the back court to retrieve some attacking shots from the opposition.

-          Senior Girls: this team played in Open Division #4 against older and more experienced teams, but we still performed very well with two outright victories (and a third by forfeit….see girls, I didn’t forget your 50-Nil record!).  Proving themselves capable of implementing more complex team rotations on court, this group has set themselves ready for more training in 2012 so they can tackle the comp again next year.

-          Open Girls: our first team to win a set at Schools Cup, and to do so twice, taking each of these matches to a third deciding set which we closely lost, one set going against us 14-16.  However, the team rallied to become the first St Andrew’s team to win a Schools Cup match in a very exciting two-set victory which was closely contested all the way to the final point!  Yes, there may even have been some celebratory tears shed by some very proud team members….and even a coach….

The excitement of our Open Girls victory on Saturday night energised our whole tour group prior to enjoying our Sizzlers dinner celebration.  It also prepared us well for the excitement of the next two victories for our Senior Girls on the Sunday morning – I can’t wait to see this team progress further with their skills for next year.

However, the weekend was about much more than just volleyball rallies on court.  With players having to officiate matches (some quite intensely competitive!), to manage minor injuries and illness to enable their team to continue playing, to support each other when things weren’t going well on court, to believe in themselves that they could contribute to their team, and of course to ensure that they acted as wonderful ambassadors for the College….it was a weekend well worth attending and a pleasure to be present with such a fine group of St Andrew’s students. Our commiserations also for those couple of players who, through illness and injury immediately prior to the tournament, could not attend with their team; see you fit and ready for 2013!

Of course, such an event is not possible without the help of a number of staff, and so thanks to Mr Rob Kelly, Mrs Caitlin Greenhalgh and Mr Michael Clapcott for their work as coaches, managers, drivers and cheersquad leaders.

Be sure to check out our volleyball gallery for photos from the weekend…a wonderful world of volleyball for all who attended!
