This year we are extremely fortunate to have three fabulous Teacher Aides working with us in the Prep classrooms. Our beautiful Teacher Aides are Mrs Moore, Mrs Masche and Mrs Cooksey!
Term 2 - Week 6
Wh
at a glamorous week we have had meeting Golden Girl. We had so much fun making our glittery green and gold glasses, creating our very own Golden Girl's Garden, sequencing the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and playing lots of fun games with our Buddies. We also completed a fabulous History task and retold the story of "How the birds got their colours." Be sure to check out our fabulous interpretations of the story on display outside the classroom. Outside it wasn't too cold for us to experiment wioth some materials and find out what happens to them when they get wet. Who knew crepe paper and water would cause so much excitement!!!
During Week 6, we will begin our assessment
for the Semester One Reports. We are also looking to a fun morning at Under 8s Day on Wednesday. Please find more details below. In Science, we have been learning about different materials. This week, each child will be designing their own object for the school environment which will be placed outside and will need to be water resistant. We will be making our objects next week, all materials will be provided. Due to our super busy assessment week I will not be changing sight words this week, but please continue to practise these with your child.

Under 8 Day – Wednesday 22 May 8:45am – 9:50am
Our Under 8 Day celebrations will be held this Wednesday. The theme for Under 8 Week this year is “Celebrating community – sharing music, movement and culture. Think locally!” This morning of fun will commence at 8:45am when the students will be singing our traditional Under 8 Day song, followed by a wonderful presentation from our Musical students and then we will enjoy some activities until 9:50am. You are welcome to attend and join in the fun during this time. Students are to wear their full sports uniform, but with a special Under 8 inspired/decorated shirt over the top, that they can wear all day. This could be anything to do with music, movement, culture or any Under 8's inspired creative design! We hope you can join us for this special celebration.

Literacy
Our main focus for literacy in Prep is initially working on our letter shape and sound. We will be using a fantastic phonics program called Letterland. Each week we will meet a new Letterland character who has their own special song, story and activity. The students will have an opportunity to present an object starting with the 'letter of the week' as part of our speaking and listening. You will find the list of these below. Reading is also a big part of our literacy program and the students will not only take readers home but will be guided through readers during the week at school. We will also be using the online reading program Reading Eggs on the interactive whiteboards and computers. Writing this term will consist of pencil grip, sight words and writing short statements; ie; I like to.... we will also be focussing on recount this term. This will include writing recount information ie: On the weekend I...

Home Reader
When you receive your child's home reader, please sign the record sheet and return it each day and I will send home a new reader. You will also have the opportunity to complete a digital reader uisng 'Bug Club' over the weekends. Please click here to read further information regarding your child's Home Reader.
Sight Words
Please read these words with your child and help them to recognise the different letters within their sight words as often as possible, at least once a day. We will also be using these words in class activities. I will be checking your child's sight word knowledge each week to ensure your child is moved onto the next set of words at the appropriate time. Prep DE sight words may remain at home and do not need to come back into class. You may like to keep them in a box, stick them on your fridge or wall, or even take them in the car to 'entertain' your child and avoid the dreaded question... "Are we there yet?!!"

Maths
This
year we will be using the Envision program that has been written according to the Australia Curriculum. Our main focus in Prep is recognising and understand all aspects of the numbers 1-20. Starting with 1-5. This means writing the numbers correctly, understanding positions/order and value. Along with number we will also be looking at patterning, shapes, units of measurement and probability.
Social Studies - Let's Remember
S
tudying personal and family history is a sound way to introduce younger students to history. The “Let’s Remember” unit will extend the students learning from Term 1, exploring how families remember and their investigating their own family’s history. Students will be involved in retelling family stories, discussing a valued family artefact, carefully examining an old family photography and listening to stories by grandparents. Students identify where they are placed in their family, relate various family stories, and identify several sources that would help answer the question ‘How do we know?’ about our own lives and that of our family.
Science - What is it made of?
All a
round us are things made from interesting materials. Who would once have imagined things like CDs, sticky notes or floppy silicone ovenware? Materials that we now take for granted are the products of imagination and exploratory science. What new materials will be part of the world of the future and how might existing materials be used in new ways? What might materials allow us to make and do? Through investigations, each student will develop skills of observing, describing, comparing and communicating. The unit provides opportunities for each student to explore, through hands-on activities, what things are made of in the school environment and the properties of the materials used to make them.
