Fit Active and Healthy in 2013

St. Andrew's is an award winning school when it comes to being fit, active and healthy. In 2009 the College was recognised at the Fit and Active School of the year in 2009 for Queensland and was a fantastic honour for the hard work achieved by so many. This was backed up further when the College won the Nike Challenge in Queensland when 100 students ran over 13000kms in 3 weeks.
At St. Andrew's we have a culture of students developing fit, active and healthy lifestyles. We provide many opportunities, advice and activities on how to achieve this.

St. Andrew's wins National award with Australian Institute of Sport (August 2010)
St. Andrew's has again been recognised for its fit, active and healthy approach with a National award by the AIS. The school has won a starboard and Hitachi projector to the value of $7414 that will be a excellent resource for video analysis and sports presentations. This is once again recognition for the great work done by students, staff and families in promoting healthy lifestyles. The announcement was made live on the Channel 9 Today Show

  • Our Break fast Club is an innovative and popular club encouraging healthy eatingand healthy exercise before school.
  • Our culture of getting involved in Community fun runs was demonstrated when over 420 students ran 5km at the Noosa 5km Fun Run in 2008. As well as our involvement in volunteering in the community at various major sport events.
  • Our Fit Foodies group of mums who are fully qualified and experienced professionals provides practical support and cater at our Sport carnivals to provide healthy food options to fuel and refuel our students.
  • Healthy Lunches and Litter free lunches are actively encouraged. In 2012 in one week we had over 1300 litter free lunchboxes.
  • Our Health and Fitness week is a massive week of fun and activity. It is also a chance for us to actively contribute to the community, raise money for charity and get involved
  • We also have wonderful links with Sports Dietitians Australia, Physios, Sport Psychologists, elite athletes and multiple Olympians who provide wonderful mentorships and advice to our students.
  • The fine line between work, rest and play is crucial to our students' happiness and we are extremely mindful of giving our students the skills to have balance in their life.
St. Andrew's wins 2 major awards in 2009

Last week we were delighted to be honoured with 2 major awards for the College as part of the 'Green and Healthy Schools Campaign 2009'. St. Andrew's won the award for 'Sunshine Coast Fit and Active School 2009' This is a wonderful accolade and a huge thank you to the students and the families for all your support in achieving this. The second award was for the 'Outstanding achievement by a group on the Sunshine Coast'. This went to the Fit Foodies and is thoroughly well deserved. The group is a wonderful asset to the College and is committed to ensuring that our students eat well and are provided with the appropriate knowledge to lead active lives and make healthy choices. My thanks to all the members of the Fit Foodies in particular, Mrs Lorna Macchia, Mrs Christine DeVille, Mrs Jane Foster, Mrs Kylie Moses, Mrs Lindy Kneebone and Mrs Rosalind Lemmey who drive the group with many other mums and dads to support.

As Regional winners of these two awards, we will now attend the State Finals in October at Parliament House in Brisbane. It is great to be part of such a fit and active school.

Tips
Adding a piece of fruit or a glass of milk to a teenager's breakfast may help protect them from depression, anxiety and disobedience, Australian research suggests.

A study of more than 800 students has found that a complex breakfast is directly linked to better mental health irrespective of family income, the student's weight or exercise routine. ( read more here )

St Andrew's offers an extensive sports program complemented with fine facilities being established on campus and in our surrounding location. Our emphasis is participation and ensuring that the promotion of active, healthy lifestyles are the basis of education

We have over 130 sports teams and compete in Local, regional, State and National competitions

The academic sports program complements our co-curricular involvement to promote a healthy lifestyle in play and nutrition that is so essential to the education and development of children in today's society.
