Curriculum Music

Welcome to Classroom Music at St. Andrew's
St. Andrew's Anglican College offers students a diverse range of musical experiences in all year levels from Prep to Year 12. I invite you to browse the Curriculum Music pages to discover what is happening in Classroom Music at St. Andrew's.

The Music curriculum at St Andrew’s comprises 13-years of sequenced experiences in music. This fact can be lost as families and students get focused in specific classes and in experiences offered to each year level. These experiences and opportunities are developmental – each contributing and adding to musical ‘knowing’ – and encompass areas of musical analysis, composing and performing. I thought this would be an opportune forum to outline some of the experiences offered to our students.

In Year 3 Music, students are involved in a year-long recorder program. Students experience and come to know music through playing – they come to know of music, and not just about it – and this was enjoyed immensely by the students last year. This provides an excellent connection to the Year 4 Music Instrumental Immersion Program, where students learn a string or band instrument as part of their academic program, and form class-based ensembles. There are strong links from here to our Co-curricular Music Program, headed by Mr Andrew Eunson, which allows an exciting synergy between the classroom and co-curricular experiences.

In the Secondary School, the one-to-one laptop program and our 20 Mac workstations in I15 provide access to ways of working with music that are accessible and meaningful. Students in these year levels have access to professional industry-standard recording and editing software, and notation programs, which can bring the music they create to ‘life’. This year will see this technology more fully integrated into our program, which is exciting for us all! The Year 8 Music students will continue to work within a program based on an action research project undertaken in 2011, which returned context-specific data based on conversations with students about meaningful musical experiences. These findings continue to inform our teaching and learning in Secondary classrooms.

It is also exciting to see an additional subject come online in 2013, Year 11 Music Extension. This program is designed as a lead-in to the rigorous Year 12 Music Extension course, which has enjoyed much success in the past few years. Students in these courses engage in a ‘specialisation’ – performing, composing or musicology – and research into an area of music that aligns with their chosen musical pathway. In addition to this, all students in the Secondary School can access composition competitions and enter their creative work. Several excursions will also complement what we investigate in the classroom.

Common to success all of these aspects, is the ability to ‘think in sound’ (audiate). An excellent way to develop this skill is through singing. Class singing features as an experience in all year levels from Prep to Year 12, with students working to develop the ability to ‘think in sound’. Not only is this an excellent performance experience, such activities will also assist students with other aspects of their class work. In addition, for students completing external music examinations (such as Trinity or AMEB), these activities will be of great benefit in preparation for aural tests and general musicianship.   To this end, I would like to encourage all students to consider joining one of the College vocal ensembles to reinforce and further develop skills introduced in class. These ensembles sing a variety of musical genres and styles and, along with developing students’ vocal and aural ability, are great fun. These ensembles will be involved with several performances, excursions and activities over the year.

This year promises to be an exciting one, and I look forward to continuing to investigate opportunities for students to make their musical experiences personally meaningful and powerful. Curriculum Music News

Congratulaitons Isabelle Noble (Class of 2010)
It is fantastic to see our graduates continue to achieve at high levels in their feilds post-school, and Isabelle Noble (Class of 2010) has certainly shown this. Belle recently received the NMIT Bachelor of Music Industry Songwriter of the Year 2012 award – a prestigious APRA-endorsed award – as a result of excellence in her recording and performance studies. Congratulations, Belle! We look forward to hearing more from you in what will be a bright future.

Congratulations Jesse Belor!

Year 12 student Jesse Belor will be playing bass with the band Wilde Child at prominent international music festival Splendour in the Grass! They are playing on the Main Stage on Sunday 29 July, alongside band such as the Smashing Pumpkins, the Hilltop Hood, Kimbra, Spiderbait and The Kooks. Check out the Splendour line-up at http://splendourinthegrass.com/home.html, and also Wilde Child’s feature on the front page of the ‘Unearthed’ website: http://www.triplejunearthed.com. Wilde Child have a new single being released through the Triple J 'Home and Hosed’ segment – make sure to check it out! What an awesome achievement for Jesse! If you’re lucky enough to have tickets to Splendour, then get along to the stage to support him.

Well done, Jesse!

Katie Noonan Steve Reich Excursion

The Year 10, 11 and 12 Music students attended a performance by Katie Noonan, and also a performance of the minimalist work Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich as part of the Queensland Conservatorium Crossbow series.

It was an outstanding evening – Katie Noonan’s silky smooth voice traversing wide-spaced registers, and a continuous 75-minute kaleidoscope of slowly evolving musical colours in Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians – and the students responded so well to some very confronting and challenging music. The Reich is a bit of a musical marathon – a minimalist work that exploited simplistic rhythms sewn together in a sea of complexity – and it was so encouraging to see many of the students transfixed to the stage for the entire duration of the performance. A brilliant and culturally-enriching evening. Thanks to everyone involved in making the evening so special, and to all of the parents for waiting to pick us up after a very late arrival back at the College.

Young Musicians Research Workshop Success!

Year 12 Music Extension student Micheala Becker has gained entry into the Young Musicians Research Scholarship Program, a joint initiative of the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Conservatorium (Griffith University). This program invites students to join with a team of researchers from the Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre and research specialists from the State Library of Queensland. St Andrew’s will be represented at this prestigious program for the second year running, with only 10 students selected state-wide.

At this workshop with staff from the Queensland Conservatorium and the State Library, Micheala will be working on her Music Extension Investigating (Research) Task which examines the effect of reed type and quality on the clarinet. To date, she has conducted a literature review and obtained data from fieldwork (experimentation and surveys), and this opportunity will present an amazing experience for her to synthesise these findings and gain support in exploring this further with a team of specialists.

An amazing opportunity for a very well-deserving recipient. Congratulations, Micheala!
