Welcome to 2014 at St Andrew's
REVEREND CHRIS IVEY
Being the Principal of St Andrew’s Anglican College is such an amazing and rewarding job, because of the people! It’s a delight to welcome the students each morning, to interact with staff as we share ideas about the future of our College and collaborate with parents to ensure a consistent approach to all we undertake. As Principal, I have the exciting challenge to implement our Strategic Intent; to leverage our positive energy and supportive community to enable our students to move confidently into their futures.
Farewell to our Class of 2014
Last week we celebrated with and said goodbye to our Class of 2014. On Tuesday we recognised the achievements and endeavour of our Secondary students at our Presentation Evening, including the presentation to our Dux and College Captain, Isaak Jackson. On Thursday evening we then congratulated our Year 12 students with their families at the Valedictory Dinner. On Friday it was a moving service as our Prep students led the Year 12 graduates out of the Richard Gowty Centre for the last time, and the College community formed the traditional guard of honour as the students walked out of the College. Our very best wishes to our Class of 2014, you have grown into fine young adults and we look forward to seeing where life takes you. More photos from these final events are on our facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/standrewsanglicancollege?ref=hl

Book Week 2014!! Connect to reading.
It was a fantastic celebration of literature last week as we celebrated Book Week. The week was full of many events including visits from authors Melaina Faranda and Pat Flynn who entertained and inspired students. We saw a closely contested Year 5 Readers Cup final and the week culminated in our wonderful Book Week Parade where students from Years Prep to 12, dressed up and celebrated. It was terrific to see so many of our Secondary students and staff joining in. Our thanks to all staff and students for your enthusiasm, participation and organisation.
News from three recent Graduates
Congratulations to three graduates from our Class of 2013 who were recently announced as AVSP (Australian Vocational Student Prize) recipients. All three students nominated by the College were successful and Josie Harycki (Certificate III in Aged Care), Tarryn Brandes (Certificate III in Tourism) and Kelly Douglas (Certificate III in Tourism) have each received $2000 in prize money to assist them in their chosen careers. Run by the Department of Education, AVSP awards specifically recognise Year 12 students who have demonstrated exceptional skill and commitment while undertaking a VET in Schools program or School-Based traineeship as part of their senior secondary studies. The nomination process is detailed and requires reports/comments from Students, Employers and the student’s school. Well done girls. We look forward to hearing how your careers progress.
Hair to Spare
Two very courageous students gave up their hair for a good cause in the Leukemia Foundation Worlds Greatest Shave. Lucy Froud (Year 12 and College Captain) and Ariel Woodhouse (Year 11) have raised over $3000. Their Hair to Spare campaign was a great way to launch the 2014 Pay it Forward Program run yearly by our Prefects, where students demonstrate that giving to others is truely a rewarding experience. Congratulations Lucy and Ariel, we are all very proud of you. It is not too late to support the girls. If you would like to contribute and support Lucy and Ariel please click on their fundraising page here. Alternatively donations are being accepted at Main Administration.
Foundation Day 2014
What a wonderful day we shared last Friday our last day of Term 2 and Foundation Day. We know that St Andrew's is so much more than English, Maths and Science and this is demonstrated on days such as Foundation Day where we pause to take the time to connect with each other. The day commenced with students from across Prep to Year 12 participating in fun House activities together. We then moved to the formal part of the celebrations with our Service. We welcomed Abi Mawby, Class of 2009 as special guest, who spoke about her time at St Andrew's and how the connections she has made through school and at University have been so valuable. If you would like to read Abi's speech please click here. We congratulated our first group of students who are in 2014 completing their entire education at St Andrew's and we congratulated our staff completing their tenth year of service this year. This was all complimented by beautiful performances from our String Orchestra and Diamond Strong band. For more photos of our music students visit our Music facebook page here Foundation Day would not be complete without our famous Diamond Dash. For more photos visit our St Andrew's Sport facebook page here.
Poochies @ Peregian
Recently St Andrew's Anglican College had a visit from 'Minnie'. Minnie is a Smart Pup in training and she is currently being sponsored with the Condon family (Ben is a Year 9 student at the College). This is the 2nd Smart Pup sponsored by the Condon family and their first (Frankie) is about to be placed with a family in need.
The Smart Pups Organisation is fantastic and the College is proud of its ongoing support of this organisation through our annual Poochies @ Peregian event. This year's event was held on Sunday 15 June here at St Andrew’s Anglican College. It was a beautiful winters day and lots of poochies turned out to enjoy the activities. There were dog training sessions, competitions and dog related displays, lots of fun for all.
Our thanks to the many local businesses including K9 Dog Wash, Craig Holmes Photography, All About Pets, T.L.C. Pet Food, Peregian Springs Veterinary Surgery, Stephen Dawson Professional Dog Training, the very important Espresso Café on Wheels and of course the Smart Pups for supporting our Poochies @ Peregian. Year 12 OP Results
Congratulations to our Year 12 OP students who received their results recently, once again, the College is extremely proud of their achievements.
Whilst percentage comparison between schools, and the use of league tables have limited use as cohorts vary from year-to-year, it is informative for our community to be aware of the academic performance of St Andrew’s students against our internal measures. Whilst we endeavour to pursue a balanced approach to education here at St Andrew’s, these results are impressive for a non-selective school such as ours and highlight the quality of teaching and learning that is taking place.
In our 6th graduating cohort, 61 students received an OP.
- Percentage of OP1-15: just above 90%. This is the third consecutive year this statistic has been above 90%, which is an outstanding result (State average of 79.2%)
- Percentage of OP1-10: 67.2% - this is our second highest result in this statistical range (State average of 49.3%)
- Percentage of OP1-5: 27.9% - this is an important statistic because it highlights the number of high achieving academic students within the cohort. (State average of 20.0%)
- Percentage of OP1-2: 11.5% - this is our second highest result in this statistic (State average of 6.2%)
- Percentage of OP1s: 3.3% (State average of 2.75%)
Other statistic measures we use to track our students’ performance are:
- Average OP = 8.4 (State average OP = 10.4). This is a terrific result and our second lowest (best) ever
- In the Queensland Core Skills (QCS test) which is used to scale school based results, 29.3% of students received an “A” grade. (State average of 15.5%). Again, this is a terrific result and reflects the development of higher order thinking skills our students are attaining.
Our warmest congratulations to our Year 12 students and their families. Well done and good luck. Pictured above are Jess Ryan OP6, Austin Wenke OP5, Sophie Sievert-Kloster and James Oliver OP 1 and Courtney David OP2 who were able to come back to visit this week to share their great news.
Primary Presentation Evening
A wonderful evening of celebration was shared last night at our Primary Presentation Evening where our Year 4 to 6 students were acknowledged for their efforts and achievements. We were honoured to have Archbishop Phillip Aspinall join us, who spoke of the growth of the College since he first came to St Andrew's and turned the first sod of soil before construction began back in 2002. As students in Years 4 to 6 crossed the stage their smiles were beaming. Congratulations to all of our Primary students for their achievements this year and to our wonderful staff who work so hard to support the students. More pictures are available on our Facebook page here.
So exciting for our Preppies - finishing their first year of school!
What a week
As we come to the end of a very busy week, I want to extend my thanks to the entire St Andrew’s community for the way in which you have embraced the variety of activities that have taken place. We ended last week with the sensational ‘Sounds of Celebration’ and then began the week with a moving Remembrance Day Service. As always, it was a pleasure to welcome the residents from the Country Club to join with us. On Tuesday evening we enjoyed our Secondary Presentation Evening and it was a fitting way to congratulate all our award recipients across so many fields. On Thursday we ran the Diamond Dash and then in the evening, the RGC was transformed as we celebrated the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner and my thanks to Mr Darcy Higgins (son of Julieanne) who presented a truly inspirational speech. And the week culminated this morning with our Year 12 Honouring Service, as our seniors said their final good byes! These pictures share a glimpse of what has been an extra-ordinary week and I want to commend all members of the community for joining in and celebrating with us. As our Year 12’s depart, I am reminded of the awesome privilege we have of being part of something quite amazing; impacting positively the lives of young people!
Sounds of Celebration was a wonderful way to celebrate the 2013 year in Music. We enjoyed beautiful performances from our ensembles and choirs and met Craig Atkinson ex member of the Ten Tenors who congratulated our Award Recipients. More photos are available to view on our facebook page here.
The 2013 Cultural Carnivale. There was an amazing variety of St Andrew's talent on display last Friday afternoon and evening as our Visual Art, Design Technology, Drama, Music and Hospitality students came together at our Arts Spectacular, the Cultural Carnivale.
The afternoon session was a lot of fun with hands on activities for the children including design your own outfit for Barbie which was very popular. It was lovely to see our Senior Students working on the creations with the younger ones. The evening was the Secondary students turn to shine with some wonderful music performances, displays from our Aspiring Artists and our Drama students and delicious canapés created and served by the Hospitality students. We were also very privileged to have Dr Debra Livingston join us as our guest judge and present some prizes. We also enjoyed the performances from the very groovy Steelpan Band along with the Ausfunk Dance Studio Cheerleaders and our Senior Dance girls.
A big thank you to all of the staff involved in putting together this incredible display of talent. Thank you also to our sponsors, the Peregian Springs Shopping Centre and Becker Helicopters , your contributions are very much appreciated and to Boutique Voyage and Thai-ism Peregian Springs who donated items for our raffle.
