Humanities

The Humanities Department is one of the biggest and most popular in the Secondary School.  It offers discrete Modern History / Geography / Ancient History Units as well as an exciting Sustainability Course in Year 9 to complement the vibrant Reconnecting with Gaia elective in year 10.

Modern History

Humanities is part of the essential core for the Middle Years. Students each year will study four terms of Humanities - two discrete History (Modern or Ancient) Units and two Geography Units.

In Year 9, students are introduced to the concept of Sustainability. They examine Humanities present consumption of the resources the Earth provides for our use and the effects that this is having on the Earth’s ecosystems. The practical experience and learning revolves around the food garden and the students gain experience in how to grow food without the use of petroleum based products and begin to understand the cycles that exist in natural systems.

Every student in Year 10 must select at least two Humanities electives, though many students choose to do more. All but two of these Units have a discrete Modern or Ancient History or Geography focus. We also offer semester-length electives in Philosophy and another in Sustainability – both very different and very popular.
Students are not required to choose Humanities in their senior years, however they are given the option to select from three Humanities courses to study in Years 11 & 12 - Modern History, Ancient History and Geography. Each course comprises eight distinct units of one term in length over the two years.
